International Art Fairs in Lima! Two! For the first time! *Somehow*, we got invites to both of the opening parties, which in turn served as our passes to get into the fairs throughout the weekend.

April 17 - 18, 2013. About 1.5 hours south of Lunahuana, we ventured to Chincha Alta y El Carmen. Chincha and El Carmen are known to be the heart of the Afro-Peruvian culture. And, it was about time to see some black folks! Lo and behold, there were cotton fields!

El Carmen, a more residential small town about 20 minutes down this one road from Chincha, had tons of murals. I think a good number of the murals were painted recently by a group of international artists to engage the community after a huge earthquake in 2007 (Inderrumbable). This was also the first time we saw black people depicted in murals. Unfortunately, our timing didn’t allow us to check out any live music, but we got a taste of the flavor at the Afro-Peruvian Cultural Center in El Carmen.

Same as every other place, people stared at me and my hair. But, the stares felt a bit different in El Carmen. I’ll write more about my hair’s travel experience later.

April 16 - 17, 2013. Chilled in Lunahuana, Peru, next to the Río Cañete. In the daytime, we went to a small vineyard in Catapalla. The vineyard has been family owned and operated for over 150 years. All of the wine and pisco was natural, without preservatives or chemicals. We could see the whole wine and pisco making process on the grounds.

Shanta’s Restaraunt and Bar in Vilcabamba. From pizza to filet mignon to liquor de serpiente. Fueled by the drive to practice spanish (and the liquor de serpiente), we had our longest continuous conversation en espanol with Shanta.

Known for his illustrious mustaches and vast experience as an Ecuadorian cowboy, Shanta gets his own post. Read the captions for more details!
