Lisa Marie Studio & 1440 Main Street are pleased to announce the upcoming artist residency and exhibition of Washington DC based artist, Lisa Marie Thalhammer at 1440 Main Street in Ferdinand, Indiana during the month of May 2012. http://lisamariestudio.com/ http://www.1440mainst.com

Home to the studio of Keith Fritz Fine Furniture, 1440 Main Street is a 35,000 square foot creative colony and warehouse space located in Ferdinand, Indiana. The space is also home to the Ferdinand Antique Emporium and the 1440 Cafe, and other creative entrepreneur art & craft studios. In these innovative surroundings, Lisa Marie will find dedicated space and time to create a new series of artworks while returning to the land of ancestors. Lisa Marie’s great great grandmother Elizabeth Grimes was born and raised in Siberia, Indiana and her great great great grandparents Maurice and Rosina Fritz lived in Schnellville, Indiana both towns only a few miles away from her residency location. http://www.keithfritz.com

Accompanied with a performance by Troubadours Of Divine Bliss of Kentucky, an Artist Residency Kick Off and Soiree will be held on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 1440 Cafe. Dinner is available beginning at 5PM and the performance begins at 7:30PM. A retrospective of art works created by Lisa Marie Thalhammer will be on exhibition during this time and visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artist who will be in residence through May 27. http://troubadoursofdivinebliss.com/

An additional meet the artist event will be held at 1440 Main Street on Thursday May 17, from 5-7pm. Visitors will have the opportunity to view artworks in process being created while in Indiana and also completed paintings, including Lisa Marie’s famously large scale portrait painting of first lady Michelle Obama.

After being named Best Visual Artist by the readers of the Washington DC arts and culture blog, Brightest Young Things, contributor Keli writes:

“Think of Michelle Obama as a giant, with stars in her eyes, and this enormous smile. This was the first painting I saw from Lisa Marie. It’s hanging, right when you enter her apartment. I’ll be the first to admit that I have a huge gay icon crush on Michelle, so, you can imagine my jaw hitting the floor as my eyes teared up in emotion upon seeing that painting. Around the corner, more: a painting of a woman, done in bright colors and angular lines, huge eyes and gestures of power and strength. Then, around the next corner, collages of sexy women on eighteen wheelers. Her work is tough and done with finesse and wow, if you collect art, make sure you check out her work. She does everything from video, to murals, to paintings and I bet she would love you forevs if you commissioned something. Just imagine, you could get your very own giant gay icon.” http://www.brightestyoungthings.com/articles/ponies-choice-awards-2011-the-winners.htm

Upon return to Washington DC following the completion of the residency, the new artworks created will be shown as part of Transformer’s 2012 Collector’s View program the afternoon of Sunday, June 3. Participants of the Collector’s View series will be invited to this private DC premier of paintings created while on residency.
An unprecedented, transnational collaboration of visionary female artists in Washington, DC

Summary

International group of talented muralists celebrates Women History Month by creating a large collaborative work of art in Washington, DC in March. The artists in this diverse collective of all ages and cultural backgrounds bring their own unique stories relevant to the women’s place in the modern society. This public work will be created on a highly visible side of private home on Florida Avenue NW. The goal is to visually transform the area and provide a forum for discussion relevant to women rights in our local and global communities.
Women artists who specialize in street art, public art and graffiti do not experience equal representation of women within these art forms. Like other forms of artistic expression born out of the urban experience, public art has been traditionally dominated by men. Yet, powerful works by women abound. These works ultimately enrich the art scene, providing alternate perspectives and diversifying its message and its relevance.
Albus Cavus, in partnership with Vital Voices Global Partnership, and local supporters like Commissioner Hugh Youngblood and other helpful neighbors convene a group of leading female artists to bring to life an unprecedented, collaborative mural showcasing the talent and vision of women.
The artists work independently, yet collaboratively to develop the sketch of the mural. The sketch will be presented to the community for feedback on Thursday, March 8 at 7pm in Perry Center. March 8 is also International Women’s Day.
The artist set a global significance of this mural as they are coming from various places. Panmela Castro, a renowned graffiti artist and women’s rights activist from Rio de Janeiro and member of the Vital Voices Global Leadership Network, represents a truly transnational collaboration of diverse voices and experiences.
The talented artists include Alicia DECOY Cosnahan, Helen Warren, Khadijah Wilson, Maggie Michael, Milena Spasic, Lisa Marie Thalhammer, Chanel Compton, Rosina Teri Memolo, Laura Elkins, Dominique Ines Alston, Diabetik, NEBSI ONE, Elizabeth Stewart, Quest Skinner.

The Butcher’s Daughter is proud to present the work of D.C. artist Lisa Marie Thalhammer for her solo debut in Detroit.

Lot Lizard 76 STLE by Lisa Marie

Born in the eighties, Thalhammer’s family owned a truck plaza off the banks of the Mississippi River. Her exhibition, Lizards Live, features drawing, collage and cut paper animation influenced by reflections upon life as a young woman amongst a male dominated American highway subculture. Her works piece together iconoclastic body parts into lizard-like creatures, transforming object and context into new symbols of veneration.

“Embellished with appropriated gospel illuminations and Byzantine patterns, the Lizards in my drawings are enthroned upon hand drawn semi trucks combining references form the two most dominate female figures within Catholic mythology: the Virgin Mary and the Mary Magdalene. I attempt to merge these two definitions of femininity by placing the Lizard in an enthroned position similar to the Madonna and Child, the work becoming an examination on the way feminine beauty is reverenced and objectified simultaneously.”

Lizard with Stars & Red Heels by Lisa Marie

Thalhammer harnesses the power of iconography and reinvents her complicated byzantine patterns, steeped in personal contemplation into efficient, universal, and undeniably powerful symbols of attraction and empowerment. Her newest work is a testament to the dedication between artist and subject:

“Lizards Live is the next chapter in my Lizard anthology. My newest works reflect a contemplative pause on the power, history and beauty of the rainbow.”

Thalhammer has been the recipient of numerous awards including five grants from the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Her work has been featured in esteemed publications such as U.S. News & World Report, Washington Post, Washington City Paper, Washington Life Magazine, D.C. Modern Luxury Magazine, Cultureserve.net, Hoogrrl.com and MTV.com. She has also appeared the cover of the Washington Blade.

Please join The Butcher’s Daughter as we welcome Lisa Marie Thalhammer to Detroit on October 24, 2009 for an Artist Talk at 5:00 PM that precedes her exhibition reception from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

About G Fine Arts: Founded in September 2001 to exhibit and promote international art from the 1960s to the present day, G Fine Art places a special emphasis on young artists – those dedicated to exploring cutting-edge cultural and artistic issues by pushing the boundaries of traditional media. Yet the gallery’s mission is not tied to any youth cult. Rather, G Fine Art seeks to create opportunities for younger artists to expand and explore new dimensions in their work, while enabling already-established artists and those who came to prominence in previous decades to be celebrated for the depth and contemporary relevance of their art.
